Welcome to the Live Oak Unified School District!

Back to School

Welcome to the web site of the Live Oak Unified School District. LOUSD is an exceptional school district dedicated to strengthening instructional methods to improve student achievement. We are excited about the upcoming school year and the many opportunities that lie ahead!

When you visit our schools, you will find that schools today are far more rigorous than they were just ten or twenty years ago - more is demanded of our students at an earlier age. Not only must students be proficient in core academic subjects, they need to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and effective communicators as well. To that end, our core principles drive us to continue to: 1) provide challenging instructional methods so students are learning at higher levels and gaining valuable skills; 2) provide students with rigorous classroom interactions, discussions, activities, and language production so students are engaged in their own learning; and 3) provide levelized opportunities that attend to the individualized needs of the students.

Our efforts do not come without challenges. While LOUSD is currently in a better financial position than most school districts and has a proven track record of sound fiscal management and improving student achievement, it is only a matter of time before the state's financial crisis begins to impact LOUSD like it has other school districts and state agencies. However, we will work hard to find that delicate balance between addressing the needs of our students within the confines of the fiscal realities of the state and local economies. Our Board of Education has already made cuts to the 2008-09 and 2009-10 budgets, but considering the most recent actions by the state legislature, we expect deeper cuts will be needed in the next year.

In the current economy, it is crucial for public agencies to find ways to operate more efficiently, and this requires us to step back and take an objective look at our traditional policies and practices. Our primary focus will be to tighten spending, target reductions, and transform processes without sacrificing strong instruction and student achievement. To that end, we will continue to collect information, analyze policies, review practices, and make recommendations that support student achievement, on an ongoing basis.

In spite of the economic crisis gripping the state, we are moving forward with construction on the high school. The high school project is a huge project, and we have set aside $17 million dollars in state and Bond funds to complete Phase I. And, federal stimulus funds are allowing us to save teaching jobs and are providing us time to adequately analyze how to re-organize our operational practices.

I am extremely proud of our schools and consider it a privilege to work with a staff and school board that invests so much energy into the community of Live Oak. Most importantly, I hope you will discover our genuine commitment to provide the best education possible for the children of Live Oak. Have a wonderful year.

Sincerely,

Tom Pritchard
Superintendent
